At Integrated Women's Wellness one of the many technologies we utilize is Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy, or PRP for short. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy takes advantage of the blood's natural healing properties to repair damaged tissue- cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and even bone.

Blood is drawn from the patient, processed in a specific and specialized way, and then spun to separate the platelets from the plasma. PRP has been researched and in use for several years, though not many mainstream physicians utilize it. There is a growing number of physicians however, who are turning to PRP injections to treat a number of degenerative or pain related ailments, including orthopedic conditions, including osteoarthritis, as well as many female issues such as vaginal dryness, pain with sex, inability to achieve orgasm, and even stress urinary incontinence.

When treating female issues with platelet-rich plasma, first the vulva and vagina are well numbed with a numbing cream. Dr. Elrod then injects PRP into specific areas of the vagina, and around the clitoris. The goal is to: Increase the health of the tissue Increase circulation Reduce pain Improve lubrication Possibly slow, halt, or even repair damage to tissue due to chronic inflammatory problems Platelet-rich plasma is derived from a sample of the patient's own blood. The therapeutic injections contain plasma with a higher concentration of platelets than is found in normal blood. What is plasma? Plasma refers to the liquid part of the blood; it is the medium for red and white blood cells and other material traveling in the blood stream. Plasma is mostly water but also includes proteins, nutrients, glucose, and antibodies, among other components.

What are platelets?

Platelets are a normal component of blood. Platelets alone do not have any restorative or healing properties but they secrete substances called growth factors and other proteins that regulate cell division, stimulate tissue growth, and promote healing. Platelets also help the blood to clot; a person with abnormal platelets or too low number of platelets will bleed excessively from a wound. What Does Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Do? Many of our patients experience: Decreased inflammation and chronic irritation Increased blood flow Increased vaginal lubrication Stronger vaginal tissue Decrease in stress urinary incontinence PRP offers a minimally invasive procedure with little to no downtime that can address these issues using a woman's own body and own regenerative cells to treat these troublesome issues.
